WASHINGTON - Sen. Robert Menendez has been tapped to co-chair the Senate Democratic Hispanic Task Force, Senate leaders announced Wednesday.

The New Jersey Democrat will team with Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., to lead the task force, which hosts special events for Democratic senators and Hispanic leaders as part of efforts to address the needs of the community.

"As co-chair of the Hispanic Task Force, I will work alongside Ken Salazar to ensure Hispanics, and the issues important to them, are an integral part of the overall Senate agenda and process," Menendez said. "We will fight to advance legislation and policies that will unlock the political, economic and social potential of America's fastest-growing segment."

The appointments were announced Wednesday by Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., chair of the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Menendez, who was born in New York City but grew up in Union City, is the child of Cuban immigrants.
