The Hispanic Democratic Caucus of the Arkansas Democratic Party has elected its officers, the newly elected chairman said Sunday.
Angela Galvis Schnuerle of Fayetteville, a lawyer, was elected to head the group. Jorge Garcia of Hot Springs and Marie Petters of Little Rock were elected vice chairmen, Schnuerle said in a telephone interview. Nicolas Trujillo of Little Rock was named treasurer, and Cheryle Guthery of Little Rock was elected secretary.
Schnuerle is a founding member of the caucus, which was formed about five years ago to involve Hispanics in Arkansas politics. She said the caucus has been monitoring legislation in the current session on issues affecting the Hispanic community, such as enforcement of immigration laws by local police and the minimum wage. The caucus plans to make a presentation to legislators on how state health services could reach more Hispanic Arkansans, she said.
