Several citizen groups are monitoring the election and have established telephone hot lines to handle complaints about voting irregularities.
One of the largest calls itself the Election Protection Coalition and is led by People For the American Way, the NAACP and the Lawyers' Committee For Civil Rights Under Law.
''It's imperative that voters have faith in our electoral system, that they go to the polls in great numbers and that their votes will be counted,'' Ralph Neas, president of People For the American Way Foundation, said in a prepared statement.

• Voter Action: 1-888-SAV-VOTE (1-888-728-8683).
